What Every Little Girl Needs to Know

I wrote this post some days ago in honour of the girl child…..

“Aunty, I will like to go back to school one day”. These were the words of a young teenage girl I met many years ago.

She sold recharge cards around the stadium in town, while I was in the University. And then somehow our paths crossed.

She lived with her aunt and had to stop going to school because of lack of funds. So she was at that spot every day trying to make money for her aunty.

I gave her things when I could and always encouraged her never to give up on her dreams of getting an education. She liked me a lot and always looked forward to my visits.

Years have passed, I graduated and moved on and never got to see my teenage friend again. I wonder if my words took deep roots in her heart, and if she ever returned to school.

Fast forward to some years later. I was on my way to work in the evening. I was on a night shift through that week. So after alighting at my bus-stop, I will walk down a long stretch of quiet road to my office.

It was usually between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. I  walked very fast because of the lonely nature of the road. On one of those days, I noticed a little girl of about 9 years old hawking her goods meters away from me.

And then I saw a middle-aged man by her side. They looked like they knew each other. He was squeezing her backside and fondling her body with a nasty look on his face. She pushed his hand away and he put it back where he wanted.

I took the next turn to my office as I wondered about what could happen to that little girl. Will that young man violate her? Will he sexually abuse her and tell her never to tell anyone? Will he steal her innocence and keep luring her with gifts? Why was she hawking at this time of the day? These were the questions in head.

There are still many young girls today in different parts of the world who have never been to school. Others were forced to drop out because of poverty and ignorance. Many of these girls suffer physical, mental and sexual abuse before turning 18. Continue reading

7 Insightful Motherhood Lessons From The Movie “Queen of Katwe”

“Sometimes the place you are used to is not the place where you belong”.

These words are the most quoted and remembered from the movie, “Queen of Katwe.”

It is a beautiful true life story about a young girl, Phiona Mutesi, who grew up in the slums of Uganda.

The movie takes you on a journey of how an encounter with the game of chess and the support of a coach completely changed the life of this young girl.

But my focus is on Phiona’s mother, Harriet Mutesi, a role played beautifully by Lupita Nyong’ O and many lessons we can learn from her.

Some minutes into the movie, you are introduced to the fierce and protective side of a mother, when Harriet confronts a man preying on her older daughter.

Harriet was a young widow with 4 children. She had also previously lost a child and was struggling to survive through each day with her children.

I watched with my ‘Mother Eyes and Heart’ 😃😃😃 and extracted 7 Insightful Motherhood Lessons :

Here you go……

This mother held on to the believe that life had nothing better to offer her.

Her past and struggles had become her limitation.

Her dreams never came to pass, so it was hard to let go of what she was used to and believe for greater things for her children.

This mother sold maize to survive. She struggled through each day to feed her children and was eventually thrown out of her house.

She and her children became homeless. They walked into the night with no hope of where to lay their heads.

That particular scene in the movie brought tears to my eyes. I saw how a mother’s limits was tested yet she kept fighting.

There is a scene in the movie where Harriet meets a man from many years ago. They were from the same village and it was obvious that the man liked her.

She was in his shop to sell off a valuable piece of fabric. She states her price and
he promises to increase the money, but only if she can give him her body.

She refuses, collects the original amount agreed on and walks away with her dignity intact.

I saw how a mother’s values was put to test and she triumphed.

When her son spoke to her about giving Phiona, his sister a chance at this new game of chess, she had her fears but she listened.

Her next course of action tells us that she listened to the words of her son.

I saw that a mother’s heart was made to listen.

Wisdom and insight shows up when she does. Continue reading

3 Reasons Why You Must Choose To Stay Happy.

Today is International Day of Happiness 2018 and this year’s theme is Share Happiness – focusing on the importance of relationships, kindness and helping each other. In 2012, the United Nations adopted the holiday as a way to “promote happiness as a goal for all human beings.”

Happiness is simply defined as the state of being happy. It can also mean pleasure, joy, satisfaction, bliss, contentment etc. Being happy is something you choose to do. #choosehappiness.

Things may look messed up right now for you, but you can choose to be happy. Your life may be in a state of chaos right now, but you can choose to be happy. A happy man/woman will definitely share that happiness with someone else. Your happiness maybe the spark that will create someone else’s happiness.

So here are 3 reasons why you must choose to stay happy.

1) Happiness is contagious.

Let the happiness bug flow from you to others. Let others find a ray of hope by simply hanging around you. Share some happiness. Happy people can force a smile to show up on a sad face. Happiness will quickly lift a broken spirit. It is not just about being happy, it is about how that happiness will radiate life to others.

 2) Happiness is thankfulness.

Being happy opens up your heart to gratitude. When you are happy in the midst of a storm or challenge, you are only being thankful for what you have and where you are. Happiness turns your focus on gratitude and you are more thankful for each moment, for the little things and for life itself.

 3) Happiness is in you.

Everyone can be happy. It is your choice and my choice. Never let negativity dictate your responses. Never let people’s opinions become your reality. Never let life’s storms defeat your faith. Never let difficulty take away your happiness because happiness is definitely in you. #choose happiness #sharehappiness

Happy New Year + 5 Ways To Get Inspired This Year.

Woman in an art exhibition

Happy New Year!

It feels great to be in this new season, with new dreams, new hopes, new desires, new aspirations and new opportunities.

I am so glad we made it here>>>>>>2018.

2018 is finally here and we have all been given the same opportunity to make our lives meaningful. It is a 365 page book, work to make your own story inspiring.

Some of us may ask, so how can I get inspired? How do I get motivated to start the year fired up? I believe that inspiration can be seen and felt all around us, we only need to be still and look for it, you will always find something or someone to inspire you.

So here are 5 ways to get inspired this year:

Take out some time this year to be alone to reflect on your life and journey so far. Be grateful for how far you have come. Spend a good amount of time thinking clearly about your future, your dreams, your goals and your action plan for the year. Think about where you are now and where you want to be. In those quiet moments, we get to receive answers to many nagging questions and find direction for our lives.

The mind is a powerful tool given to us by God. Use your imagination this year. Use your imagination to break limitations. Use your imagination to see possibilities. Use your imagination to enter places you never dreamt possible. Use your imagination to see solutions. Use your imagination to create. Make up your mind this year to draw inspiration from the catalogue of possibilities in your imagination.

It is true that words are powerful whether written or spoken, and that these words have the power to influence or destroy our lives. Choose to draw inspiration from words this year, whether written or spoken.

Perhaps the year has started on a low note and you need some inspiration to birth new dreams and find purpose. Simply get a good book on your desired subject and read through. Read the stories of great men and women and draw some inspiration from their journey. You can start with a good autobiography or memoir(feel free to suggest any in the comments section). Get inspired this year reading some great books.

When fail to write down your ideas and thoughts, you simply let them slip away. Learn to capture the ideas and thoughts that come to you on paper this year. Have a notepad where you can write down those ideas as they come or simply use your phone to do the job

The Power Of A Mother’s Love.

This is for all mothers, mothers to be and mothers waiting.

I once heard a story about a 45 year old unmarried woman. She was rebellious in her youth and had given so much pain to her parents. She fell ill, was in a bad state and needed to go to the hospital. But she lacked funds.

Every member of her family was pissed off with her. She had brought a lot of sorrow to them with her lifestyle. Her brother boldly told the mother to leave her to her fate.

But her mother, who this same daughter had rained abuses on and brought so much shame to said to her son, ‘She is my daughter, I can’t just leave her like that.’ That is how powerful the love of a mother can be.

You are a mother and you have been called to mold hearts and shape destinies.

Be there when your children call!

Stand with them through every pain, challenge and difficulty.

Your hugs can build their confidence.

Your words can shape their future. Continue reading

What Step Are You On At The Moment In Your Life’s Journey?

mm (1)

We are all on a journey. Every man on his path. It is also a journey where we take it one step at a time. Every step has its ‘Aha’ moments while some other steps will come with its difficult moments.

What step are you on now on your journey to achieving your dreams? Are you in a place of doubt with the ‘I can’t do it’ syndrome or Is it the ‘I want to’ yet doing nothing syndrome?

Are you are still in the ‘I will’ phase which when not acted upon simply fades away.

How about the ‘I will try’ syndrome which simply needs a little courage to act. I know many love the ‘yes I did it’ part, but always forget that you overcame a lot of those other syndromes to get where you are today.

What step are you on at the moment in your life’s journey? Rate yourself and drive yourself from within.

Many Hugs,

Think About That Which Lies Within You

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

The past is gone and the future is before us, between the two lies this one moment. Now!

What lies behind you are lessons to move you ahead, what lies before you are puzzles to solve, what lies within you is the power to make a change.

The past is but a fading memory and the future like a blossoming plant.

What lies behind you are your limitations, what lies before you is your inspiration and that which lies within you is the propelling force to become.

The past is forgotten and the future is enticing, between the two is the power to choose.

Behind you lay broken dreams, before you are new/resurrected dreams and that which lies within you is the courage to pursue your dreams. Continue reading

Everything You Have Ever Wanted

“Everything you have ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear.” – George Addair

What is that thing you have always wanted to achieve? What are your dreams and aspirations? What do you intend to do with your life? Take a look over your shoulder, everything you have ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear.

What has life thrown at you? How do you intend to pick up from where you stopped? What is that one thing holding you back?  Take a look over your shoulder, everything you have ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear.

What will your story be? Who will you impact with your uniqueness? How are your gifts and talents making the world a better place?  Take a look over your shoulder, everything you have ever wanted is sitting on the other side of fear.

Marrianne Williamson said: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” Continue reading
